- ITI Annual General Meeting 2022

Basel, Switzerland, April 5, 2022 – At the ITI Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2022, held in conjunction with the ITI Congress Italy in Rome, Italy on April 2, the establishment of three new ITI Sections was officially announced along with two ITI Honorary Fellowships and the launch of the ITI Distinguished Achievement Award.

New ITI Sections
At the meeting, ITI President Charlotte Stilwell announced the establishment of three new ITI Sections, bringing the overall total to 34. Until recently, Thailand and Vietnam were part of the regional Section South East Asia, however their exponential growth and the concentration of activities in these countries made them excellent candidates for their own Sections.

Originally planned for later this year, the ITI Board of Directors – in view of the current situation and the impressive progress of the Ukrainian ITI community – also awarded official Section status to Ukraine with immediate effect.

“In the light of everything that is currently happening in Ukraine, it is more important than ever to uphold our community spirit”, said Charlotte Stilwell, ITI President. “We therefore took the opportunity, in however small a gesture, to grant well-deserved Section status to our ITI community in Ukraine. The ITI extends its deeply felt compassion to all those affected by this humanitarian tragedy.”

ITI Awards 2022
The ITI regularly recognizes long-standing Fellows with a distinguished career with an ITI Honorary Fellowship for their outstanding contribution to the ITI and/or the field of implant dentistry. Since 1992, 21 Honorary Fellowships have been awarded. This year, the ITI is proud to add two new names to this list of eminent honorees: Lisa Heitz-Mayfield (Australia) and Frauke Müller (Switzerland), both former ITI Board members and Committee Chairs, and also the first two women to be presented with the ITI’s highest recognition.

At this year’s AGM, the ITI also introduced a new award that recognizes the contribution of individuals both within and outside the ITI. The ITI Distinguished Achievement Award is presented to professionals who have made a strong and enduring contribution to either a specific milestone topic in implant dentistry or a particular ITI project. The first recipients of this award are Anthony Dawson (Australia) and Steven Eckert (USA). Dawson received the award for his contribution to the ITI SAC Classification in Implant Dentistry, in particular for spearheading and coordinating the fully revised second edition of the assessment tool and the accompanying book. Eckert was presented with this award for his significant work disseminating implant-related research and knowledge in his editorial role for leading journals within the field.

André Schroeder Research Prizes 2022
At the ITI Annual Conference, held prior to the AGM, Ryan Lee (Australia) and Stefan Bienz (Switzerland) together with their co-authors were announced winners of the 2022 André Schroeder Research Prizes. Lee received the prize for pre-clinical research for his study on “Re-establishment of macrophage homeostasis by titanium surface modification in type II diabetes promotes osseous healing”. The prize for clinical research went to Bienz for his paper on “Clinical and histological comparison of the soft tissue morphology between zirconia and titanium dental implants under healthy and experimental mucositis conditions—A randomized controlled clinical trial”. Both winners were each presented with an engraved gold medallion and 10,000 Swiss Francs.

ITI Congress Italy and Annual Conference
After an enforced break of three years, the ITI was extremely pleased to hold a series of global on-site events enabling ITI Fellows and Members to meet again in person. The AGM was preceded by the Annual Conference that focused this year on “Peri-implant softtissue integration and management”, in line with the recently published Volume 12 of the ITI Treatment Guide book series. And preceding that, the ITI Congress Italy on “Esthetics in implant dentistry: Clinical and scientific evidence” was held from March 31 to April 1.

Both events were well attended and attracted 1,005 and 885 participants, respectively, providing a clear indicator that dental professionals are happy to be meeting again in person.
